These are some of the works covering the history of Scotland during the War of Independence against England (1296-1328) and the people and families involved. Their bibliographies and footnotes should give you a start on finding sources for further research and more specialized works. (And since I am often asked about it, here are a few words Regarding the Film Braveheart.)
The War of Independence and Scotland 1296-1328
- Barrow, G. W. S. Robert Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland, 3rd ed. Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 1993.

This is the definitive biography of King Robert I. Although specifically about Bruce, it is also an excellent history of the War of Independence in general. Detailed and comprehensive, it is a must for anyone interested in this period of Scottish history.

Watson, Fiona. Under the Hammer: Edward I and Scotland, 1286-1307. East Linton, UK: Tuckwell Press, 1998.

-
Barron, E.M. The Scottish War of Independence: a Critical Study 2nd ed. 1934.
Characterized by Dr. Grant G. Simpson as "erratic, but sometimes stimulating". As with all older works, this must be used with caution -- Scottish historians do know more now than in 1934!
Individual Biographies and Family Studies

- Fisher, Andrew. William Wallace. Edinburgh: John Donald Publishers, Ltd, 1986.

This a relatively reliable biography of Wallace, although it isn't always as skeptical of unsupported legend as one would like. (Unfortunately, I am not aware of any really excellent biographies of Wallace -- there is certainly nothing to compare to Barrow's biography of Robert Bruce.)

Young, Alan. Robert the Bruce's Rivals, the Comyns, 1212-1314. East Linton, UK: Tuckwell, 1997.
