Onomastica -- Discussion of historical names research and article projects.

About Onomastica
English (USA)

Onomastica is a mailing list for discussing and collaborating on historical names research and article projects (mostly but not exclusively aimed at an historical re-creation audience, such as the SCA and renaissance fairs). It is a place for sharing discoveries, asking questions, and getting and giving assistance with all aspects of historical names research. Topics may range from how to interpret primary source evidence to whether the wording of an explanation will make sense to non-experts. The list is for anyone with an interest: beginner, expert, or merely curious -- and lurkers are very welcome. (But note that you most definitely do not need to be knowledgeable about names in order to be helpful to others. Lack of onomastic expertise is positively an advantage when it comes to judging how easy to understand or confusing an explanation or article is for a general audience.)

Onomastica is intended to complement, not compete with, existing forums such as SCAHrlds or the Academy of S. Gabriel, where similar topics are discussed, by providing a venue where the sole focus is the research and writing of articles, without the high volume of posts about other issues (e.g., without the SCA registration and armory discussions on SCAHrlds, without the client processing on S. Gabriel, etc.).

Onomastica discussions are archived, but the archives are only available to list members.

List-specific etiquette:

Posters are encouraged to sign with their real names.

If posting a request for comments on one of your articles, please use the article's title as the subject line and add a draft number. E.g. "16th Century Upper Slabovian Names -- Draft 2". This helps commenters distinguish between articles and spot new drafts to comment on. If the article title is very long, a shortened version may be used.

If commenting on an article, please keep the same subject line used by the author when they requested comments. E.g., when replying to "16th Century Upper Slabovian Names -- Draft 2", use the subject line "Re: 16th Century Upper Slabovian Names -- Draft 2". This helps authors keep track of comments. (Pre-pended "Re:" and "[Onomastica]" tags are okay, and do not need to be removed.)

Otherwise, please use descriptive subject lines, and change subject lines when the topic changes.
